{"id":110,"date":"2007-08-02T23:43:40","date_gmt":"2007-08-03T07:43:40","guid":{"rendered":"\/?p=110"},"modified":"2010-01-18T02:25:28","modified_gmt":"2010-01-18T10:25:28","slug":"goddamnit-i-have-a-patent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slimjimmy.com\/weblog\/archives\/2007\/08\/02\/goddamnit-i-have-a-patent\/","title":{"rendered":"Goddamnit, I have a patent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I received papers from Sony today saying that the <acronym title=\"United States Patent and Trademark Office\">USPTO<\/acronym> actually approved <a href=\"http:\/\/patft.uspto.gov\/netacgi\/nph-Parser?u=%2Fnetahtml%2Fsrchnum.htm&#038;Sect1=PTO1&#038;Sect2=HITOFF&#038;p=1&#038;r=1&#038;l=50&#038;f=G&#038;d=PALL&#038;s1=7246273.PN.&#038;OS=PN\/7246273&#038;RS=PN\/7246273\">some ridiculous patent application<\/a> that my then-coworkers dragged me into filing with them four years ago.<\/p>\n<p>I think it&#8217;s just further evidence of how overwhelmed the patent office is, of how ill-equipped they are to evaluate software patents, and of how software patents are usually lame.  It&#8217;s another example of how large corporations flood the patent office with anything and everything to try to build up their patent portfolios, and not because they think they&#8217;re <em>good<\/em> ideas worth pursuing, but because they want things with which to defend themselves in case someone <em>else<\/em> sues them for patent infringement.  Stupid patent cold wars.<\/p>\n<p>It saddens me to think that my name is associated with that dreck.
